What Does 301 Mean?

301 Redirect

301 redirect is the most efficient way and Search Engine friendly method for redirection. The 301 redirect is not hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. the 301 redirect will also help your page to be "re-indexed" properly so people will start going to the new page without going through the 301 redirect... but keep in mind that it will take some time to "re-index" in every Search Engine and might take longer for directories. But with the 301 in place, it isn't an issue.

Is the 301 redirect for you?
If you have to change page names, file names, rename directories or you move pages around, it's the safest option. So yes. Even if you update or cleanup only once.

The "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently" and "redirect" means just that... a new path.

301 Redirect can be used most (if not all) program languages like ColdFusion, PHP, ASP, ASP.NET and .htaccess (old domain to New domain; old page to new page; old directory to new directory)
